Jack was accustomed to living a typical life, taking care of his business and spending time with his devoted dog, Ralph, in peace. Jack discovered an abandoned infant in the grass one typical afternoon while he was checking on Ralph, who had been barking along the street. Jack had a reputation for kindness and giving despite his wealth. He had lived a promising life until three months ago. In an attempt to provide the infant with the attention she needed, Jack was moved by a wave of compassion and went right away to a local store to buy baby milk and diapers. He took care of her needs when he got home, feeding her and changing her diapers, and then he called the police to report what had happened. “Can I become her guardian?” Jack said without hesitation. He promised everyone that he could create a loving and stable environment because he ran his company from home. The police checked his information and gave him permission to temporarily look after the young girl. After several months, the kid, who social services had given the name Emily, was placed for adoption as there were no leads on her birth parents. Jack quickly completed the legal papers, adopted her as his own, and even gave her his own name in honor of his own mother, who had reared him.

Raising Emily was Jack’s whole focus, and he treated her like the daughter he had always desired. Their relationship grew stronger every day. They spent afternoons in the neighborhood arcade, went to their favorite ice cream shops, went to the park, and ate meals together. Many people commented on how much Emily and Jack looked alike when Emily entered school at age seven; even his closest friends said they could have passed for twins. Jack interpreted these remarks as kind confirmations of their mutual love and bond.

Emily once fell and scraped her head on the sidewalk while she and Ralph were playing in their backyard. Jack saw a familiar mark on her skin as he treated the wound—a birthmark that he, too, had. “Would you look at that, sweetheart?” he whispered, startled at the striking resemblance. Our birthmarks are identical! “We were always meant to be together, Dad,” Emily whispered quietly as she glanced up with teary eyes.

This discovery intrigued Jack, who sent samples of his own and her hair for a DNA test. A 99.9% match was found when the results were returned three weeks later. He was suddenly hit with the realization that Emily was his biological daughter. He called his ex-wife, overwhelmed and bewildered. He insisted, “Why didn’t you tell me we had a daughter?” “I didn’t want to see you ever again, and I didn’t want to raise your child,” she said in a chillingly direct reaction. I knew you would find her, so I left her on the road. Don’t give me another call. Even as he sobbed, Jack understood that the truth only strengthened his love for Emily and confirmed his dedication to her.

During all of this, Emily discovered him crying and asked him softly, “What’s wrong, Dad?” He soothed her, sniffling, “There’s nothing wrong, dear. I’m simply overjoyed. Recall that I received you from heaven. And from that point on, their relationship became closer, strengthened by the hardships they had faced.

Jack eventually found love again. He met and married one of Emily’s teachers during the many school functions he attended for her. Emily even gave birth to a baby sister two years after they were married, and the family grew into a loving, close-knit community. Jack made the decision to retire early since he was so happy now and wanted to spend as much time as possible with his kids.
