Shelter Writes Hilarious Adoption Ad For Cat With ‘Big Feelings’
“Come meet Salem. He might hiss. He might cuddle. He might steal your soul.”

Salem was surrendered to DeKalb Humane Society after his previous family found themselves overwhelmed with too many cats. He spent some time living outside and is now settled in at the shelter and adjusting to being an indoor cat again. As the shelter staff have gotten to know him, they’ve found that he’s a very interesting guy — with a LOT of personality.
“Salem is something else — in the best possible way,” Teresa Feightner, director of DeKalb Humane Society, told The Dodo. “He’s affectionate, hilarious and a total ham … until you do something he doesn’t vibe with (like giving meds, discouraging him from climbing the curtains, or scratching the wrong spot). Then? He might smack or nip — briefly — before returning to sweet, charming Salem like nothing happened. He’s dramatic, endearing and unforgettable.”
Recently, the shelter started a new initiative where visitors can fill out “feline report cards” after spending time with the cats. A longtime volunteer, Emma, was joking with the shelter’s cat coordinator about Salem — and ended up writing a one-of-a-kind report.
After reading her hilarious assessment of Salem, the shelter staff were inspired to write a hilarious adoption ad Facebook post telling the world all about Salem and his quirks.

“Emma filled out a truly unhinged and hilarious report card that sparked the post,” Feightner said. “It captured his chaotic charm perfectly.”
The post describes Salem as having “big feelings” and describes him as the kind of cat who is “plotting your demise if you dare make direct eye contact.” The humorous take on Salem’s dramatic personality is hilarious and perfect.
Unfortunately, the ad didn’t work the way the staff had hoped it would.
“The reaction has been amazing — lots of laughs, shares and engagement on social media,” Feightner said. “Unfortunately, it hasn’t translated into adoption interest yet. Despite all the buzz, Salem hasn’t received an application. We think it’s because he needs a very specific kind of home — someone who gets cats with big personalities.”
Salem is looking for a home with someone who is a cat person through and through. As Feightner puts it, he’s not a “beginner cat.” He needs someone who will meet him where he’s at and respect his boundaries. He has very strong opinions and isn’t afraid to express them, but he also has so much love to give to the right people.
“If someone is looking for a cat who keeps them laughing, guessing and constantly on their toes (in a fun way!), Salem could be the perfect match,” Feightner said. “He’s a rewarding companion for someone who appreciates a little chaos with their cuddles.”
