They didn’t know what to do … until she moved.

A group of railroad workers was doing repairs and maintenance when they noticed someone lying on the tracks, completely still. They thought whoever it was might have already passed … but then she moved ever so slightly. After getting a little closer, they discovered she was a raccoon in desperate need of help, and they quickly contacted MoonShine Wildlife Rehabilitation.
“The worker put her into a milk crate with a towel and brought her to us,” Christine McCully of MoonShine Wildlife Rehabilitation told The Dodo. “She was emaciated, suffering from head trauma, had a concussion and wounds on her head and lost a back toe. She was not able to move her back legs or hold her head up.”
Her rescuers took her straight to Whitestone Animal Hospital to have X-rays done, which found that she had a major concussion and a small fracture in her skull. With her injuries, no one knew what the next few days would hold for the raccoon. Regardless, they vowed to give her the absolute best care possible.
After several days of fluids, medications and hand feeding, the raccoon has finally begun eating on her own and even regained her ability to walk. It’s such a huge amount of progress for only a few days, and her rescuers are both shocked and thrilled.
“She still stumbles and has a ways to go, but she is doing so much better than expected,” McCully said.
It’s still unclear what the raccoon’s healing journey will look like. She and her rescuers will navigate it together, though, and they’ll care for her as long as they need to.
“Please keep this brave little girl in your thoughts as we give her the time, care, and compassion she deserves,” The rescue wrote on Facebook. “Our hope is that one day, she will return to the wild where she belongs.”
