Hikers Reach 8,000-Foot Mountain Summit And Discover A Dog Unable To Move
“I’m sure he wouldn’t have made it …”

A few years ago, married couple Maxime and Issy hiked up Bobotov Kuk, the tallest peak in Montenegro. When they reached the mountain’s summit, they were surprised to find a dog lying on his side, unable to move.
The dog had an old bandage wrapped around his leg and was clearly underweight. Despite his severe injuries, he was still friendly and could tell the couple wanted to help. As they bent down to offer him water and a can of tuna, he wagged his tail.
Maxime tried to fit the dog in his backpack to carry him down the mountain, but the dog was too large. At that point, the couple had to make the excruciating decision to leave the dog and come back for him with proper supplies. They didn’t stop worrying about him that entire night.
The next day, while Issy stayed behind to gather supplies, Maxime returned to the 8,000-foot summit with a member of a local mountain rescue group, Blažo. Maxime and Blažo worked together to carry the dog down the steep, tall mountain.
“We took turns carrying him on our backs,” Maxime told The Dodo. “We just put [him] in the blanket, we grabbed the four corners, and we put him over our shoulders.”
As Maxime was carrying the dog, he was already starting to get attached to him. He decided to name him Bobo after Bobotov Kuk. Maxime was grateful to have found the pup when he did and didn’t want to think about what would have happened if he hadn’t rescued him.
“I’m sure he wouldn’t have made it,” Maxime said. “He was in that bad of shape.”
When Maxime finally reached the bottom of Bobotov Kuk, he heard from Issy that while she’d been getting organized to take care of the dog, she’d rescued a little stray kitten named Voli. The couple couldn’t believe that they’d somehow saved and adopted two animals in one day.
The couple rushed Bobo to the vet, where he received basic medical care to treat his infected leg. It wasn’t until a later doctor’s visit that they learned the heartbreaking truth: Bobo’s leg injury was the result of a bullet wound.
Bobo underwent an amputation surgery, which the vets determined was the best decision for his quality of life. Maxime and Issy were worried, but Bobo was incredibly resilient. Just a few days after his surgery, he was already jumping and running around.

“It’s crazy how agile he is,” Maxime said. “When we are hiking in the mountains, he’s always the one in front waiting for us.”
“We often catch them cuddling up together on the couch, or Voli is giving him a clean,” Maxime said.
Given how happy and energetic Bobo is now, it’s hard to imagine that just a few years ago, he was abandoned on a mountain with a bullet wound. Thanks to Maxime and Issy, he got a second chance and a beautiful new life.
